What is Grid-Aware Home Charging?

Grid operators Enexis, Stedin and Liander are working with a number of energy and charging providers to encourage households to use electricity at times when the grid is less busy. Grid-Aware Home Charging does this by temporarily pausing charging power at peak times. The initiative helps keeps the energy system accessible and affordable.

On winter weekdays, lots of people get home at around the same time. The heating is turned on, dinner is cooked and the car gets plugged in, which makes the grid especially crowded between 16:00 and 21:00.

If you wait until after 9pm to charge your electric car at home, you help take the pressure off the grid during those busy hours. Together, that frees up room for new homes and greener energy in your area.

Get started with Grid-Aware Home Charging in three steps

You can take part in Grid-Aware Home Charging from 1 December 2026 to 28 February 2027, on all weekdays (including public holidays that fall on a weekday). It’s free and you can stop participating at any time. At weekends and outside peak hours, you charge as usual.

Fill in the sign-up form and accept the terms and conditions.

From 1 December to 28 February, avoid charging your electric vehicle between 16:00 and 21:00 on weekdays. You can do this by turning on Netbewust Thuisladen in your dashboard, which automatically pauses charging between 16:00 and 21:00 (this feature is currently in its testing phase). After 21:00, your car will simply continue charging as usual.

We’ll draw three winners of €400 in Bol.com gift cards from everyone who takes part for at least 40 weekdays and charges during peak hours on no more than 1 in 10 participation days.

Need to charge anyway? Here’s how

Sometimes you’ll need to charge your car unexpectedly in the evening. In the E-Flux dashboard, you can let us know you want to charge anyway. Your charging station turns on right away and you can charge as usual for the rest of the day. Grid-Aware Home Charging picks up again on the next weekday. You can charge during peak hours as often as you need to, but that day does count as a charging day for the prize draw. To stay in the draw, only charge during peak hours on 1 in 10 of your Grid-Aware Home Charging participation days at most (so you avoid peak hours on at least 90% of them).

Grid-Aware Home Charging with E-Flux

E-Flux is an energy company supporting Grid-Aware Home Charging. On the E-Flux platform you can manage your charging station, view your sessions, set up Grid-Aware Home Charging and make sure you can still charge on days when it doesn’t suit you. E-Flux doesn’t share account details or charging sessions with anyone else. The grid operator only sees the number of participants per postcode and the average charging power of all participants combined, per 15 minutes.

If for technical reasons we can’t limit your charging station’s power, we’ll do everything we can to fix this as quickly as possible. Until then, we ask you to charge as little as possible between 16:00 and 21:00 yourself, for example by plugging in later or setting a charging schedule in your car.

You can take part if you’re 18 or older, live in the Netherlands and charge at home on your own connection. Your charging station needs to be linked to your E-Flux account. Business, public or shared charging stations aren’t eligible yet.

That’s always fine. If you have automatic Grid-Aware Home Charging turned on for your charging station, you can let us know in the E-Flux dashboard that you want to charge anyway. Your charging station switches on straight away and you can charge as normal for the rest of the day. Grid-Aware Home Charging picks up again on the next weekday.

In this case, that day counts as a charging day. If you charge during peak hours on more than 1 in 10 participation days, you won’t be entered into the prize draw.

In most cases, yes. Between 21:00 and 07:00 you have ten hours to charge, which is enough to fill the battery of most cars on a home charging station. If you know in advance that you need to leave earlier, you can always choose to charge during peak hours anyway.

Yes, you can stop at any time in your E-Flux dashboard. You’ll stay in the prize draw as long as you’ve taken part for at least 40 weekdays and avoided charging during peak hours on at least 9 out of 10 days.

The winners are picked at random by computer and will be notified by email within two weeks after the draw.

Smart charging mainly looks at the electricity price or your solar panels and charges at the cheapest times. Grid-Aware Home Charging looks at how busy the grid is: on weekdays, you don’t charge between 16:00 and 21:00. You can combine the two, as long as you don’t charge during those hours.

Yes. It doesn’t matter whether you’re on a fixed, variable or dynamic energy contract, because you’re simply charging outside peak hours.
