Together with Stekker, our valued EMS (Energy Management System) partner, we recently hosted a topical webinar on the dynamic and ever challenging world of smart charging. A development that plans to shake up the EV world. The session was filled with insights from our experts Erik de Bruin (Co-founder of Stekker) and Leon Hemrika (Sales Engineer at Road). Below we have listed the top 5 takeaways from the session.
Smart charging offers a glimpse into how our EV futures may look. Providing not only personal benefits to your wallet, but also helping contribute to a greener mobility future through creating a more sustainable and efficient energy grid.
For the daily driver to the browsing business. These are the points from our smart charging webinar that you don't want to miss.
The 5 key insights
1. Save significantly on costs, using solar panels and dynamic tariffs to their full potential
One of the most direct benefits of smart charging is the impact on your energy bill. The system optimises for the 'best' moment to charge your car. For example by charging when power is cheapest (off-peak hours / negative prices) or when your solar panels are producing plenty of energy. This can lead to significant savings and, in some cases allowing access to additional income through mechanisms like 'renewable fuel units" otherwise referred to in dutch as (HBEs) or hernieuwbare brandstofeenheden.
2. Maintaining full comfort and control over your charging session
A common concern for many is that you lose control when using a 'smart' system. The webinar highlighted that this is not the case and in fact, although the system automatically chooses the most optimal charging times, the user still has full control over the session via Stekker's handy app. This is ideal when you need to make an unexpected trip or simply require your car charged sooner. If left alone the default settings of the smart charging software will always ensure that your car is full on time, never the less there is always the option to intervene giving you the user full control.
3. Smart charging with minimal effort
What makes smart charging go from a innovative software to an everyday integrated technology in our lives is just how easy it is to use. Your daily routine remains unchanged whilst the intelligent software does all the work in the background. All you need to do is remember your charge card and plug in. The key to this process is convenience, with you the driver being involved as little as possible.
4. Smart charging is more than a few simple timers; it's an advanced, self-learning system
While traditional timers activate charging at fixed pre set times, the capabilities of smart charging go much further. The smart charging system which sits on top of Road's software maximises its control through the use of advanced algorithms, AI, and machine learning. These tools help the system in monitoring for a multitude of factors, from current energy prices, grid load, to weather forecasts, and even your personal preferences and characteristics of your vehicle. This advanced system results in an exponentially more effective and efficient charging strategy.
5. More than just a stable grid, charging smartly contributes to a green EV ecosystem.
Beyond the personal benefits, smart charging has a broader societal impact for all of us. By spreading out charging moments and powering these moments with renewable ready to go energy produced by green resources like solar panels, you individually help us all to avoid grid congestion. A more stable energy grid, allows for more space, in turn allowing for more and more renewable energy sources to be integrated.
Short but sweet. These were the key takeaways from our session with Stekker. The capabilities of smart charging are clear and ever growing. From saving on money and time to helping create a greener more environmentally friendly future. Smart charging software serves to benefit us all.
